Nigeria to Host Global Weather, Water and Climate Leaders at Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026

Nigeria is set to make history as it hosts the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026, bringing together some of the world’s foremost leaders in weather, water and climate services for the first-ever edition of the event to be held on African soil.
The three-day high-level meeting, scheduled for October 13 to 15, 2026, will take place at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) serving as host at the invitation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General.
The gathering will convene the leadership of the WMO, the 17 member institutions of the Alliance for Hydromet Development—including major development banks, climate funds and United Nations agencies—alongside ministers, government officials, development partners, regional and continental organizations, private sector leaders, financial institutions, academia, and users of weather, water and climate services.
The meeting will focus on advancing global collaboration under the theme, “Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainable Investment in Weather, Water and Climate Services.”
The event is expected to provide a strategic platform for strengthening hydrometeorological systems that support disaster risk reduction, food and nutrition security, water resources management, sustainable aviation, energy planning, public health, climate adaptation and community resilience.
Hosting the annual meeting places Nigeria at the forefront of global discussions on climate resilience and sustainable development. Through NiMet, the country will showcase its progress in strengthening meteorological and hydrological services while demonstrating how coordinated investments can improve weather and climate services and reduce government spending pressures in the hydrometeorological sector.
The programme is structured around five strategic pillars: strengthening partnerships and Alliance coordination; mobilising sustainable investment; promoting innovation and public-private engagement; delivering user-centred weather and climate services; and building sustainable hydrometeorological systems.
Organisers say the meeting is expected to deepen international partnerships, unlock new investments, encourage innovation and enhance the long-term sustainability of weather, water and climate services across Africa and beyond.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, will serve as the Chief Host of the event.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Director-General of NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, Professor Charles Anosike, said hosting the global gathering underscores Nigeria’s commitment to advancing weather, water and climate services as critical tools for sustainable development.
“Nigeria is proud to host the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026 and promote the critical relevance of weather, water and climate services for de-risking national, regional and global socioeconomic activities,” Anosike said.
