Nigeria Mourns Development Economist, Dr Emeka Okengwu

Renowned development economist, policy analyst and public affairs commentator, Dr Emeka Flemin Okengwu, is dead.
Dr Okengwu reportedly passed away on May 10, 2026, following a brief illness, according to tributes and obituary publications by associates and professional groups.
Until his death, Dr Okengwu was widely respected for his contributions to Nigeria’s development planning, mining sector reforms, agricultural transformation and industrial policy advocacy. He served as Executive Director of Biosources and Technologies Limited, where he championed bioethanol development from cassava as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agro-processing industry.

He was also a familiar voice on television and policy platforms, where he regularly analysed economic and governance issues affecting Nigeria and Africa.
Over the years, Dr Okengwu worked with several national and international institutions, including the World Bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and various Federal Government committees on mining, infrastructure and economic development.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, associates and admirers who described him as an intellectual giant, mentor and patriot committed to justice, transparency and national development.
Born on January 1, 1964, Dr Okengwu held a PhD in Development Economics, alongside degrees in Political Science and Entrepreneurship.
