The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has praised the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, for championing initiatives aimed at equipping Nigerian girls with practical digital skills and preparing them for opportunities in the technology sector.
The commendation came during the 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme, where the Commission hosted 185 female students from across the country in Abuja for an educational excursion to the National Communications Museum.
The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to bridge the gender gap in technology and encourage greater female participation in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
During the tour, the students were taken through the evolution of telecommunications in Nigeria, exploring exhibits that showcased the sector’s journey from early communication systems to today’s advanced broadband and digital technologies. The experience provided participants with a practical understanding of the industry’s development and its role in national growth.
NCC officials said the programme was designed to inspire young girls to view themselves as future innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders within the technology ecosystem. By exposing participants to the history, achievements, and possibilities within the ICT sector, the Commission hopes to encourage more girls to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and other technology-related disciplines.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting digital inclusion, noting that empowering girls with digital knowledge is essential to building a more diverse and competitive workforce. It stressed that increasing female representation in ICT will contribute significantly to innovation, economic development, and Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.
According to the NCC, the National Girls in ICT Programme remains a key platform for breaking down barriers that discourage girls from entering technology fields while creating pathways for the emergence of future female tech professionals, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.
