The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has explained that telecom service rates are determined through a comprehensive cost study that analyzes the actual costs of providing services to consumers. This clarification was made by Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of NCC, during an interactive session with industry reporters in Abuja.

The service rates Service were determined by NCC by a thorough analysis of the costs involved in providing telecom services, including infrastructure, maintenance, and personnel costs.

The commission ensures that service charges are fair and cost-oriented, protecting consumers from arbitrary rate hikes.

The NCC has conducted a cost study for USSD charges and is currently reviewing the rates to ensure they are based on actual costs.

The cost of building and maintaining telecom infrastructure, the cost of maintaining and upgrading telecom equipment and networks, and the cost of employing personnel to manage and operate telecom services.

The NCC protects consumer interests by scrutinizing the costs and justifications behind service providers’ proposed rates.
By doing this  the Commission ensures that rates are fair and based on actual costs, making it challenging for ordinary consumers to participate directly in rate determination discussions due to the level of expertise required.
