President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 cash reward pledge to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The players have commenced receiving payments estimated at ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the President’s pledge in recognition of their record-extending 10th African championship.
Tinubu had announced the reward after the Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final played in July 2025.
The Nigerian women, who were two goals down, displayed exceptional determination and resilience to overturn the deficit and reclaim the continental crown, further consolidating their dominance in African women’s football.
Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, expressed appreciation to the President for honouring his commitment, describing the payment as a significant recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.
The fulfilment of the pledge underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to recognising sporting achievements and rewarding athletes who bring honour to the country on the international stage.
The President had earlier demonstrated similar support for the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, by fulfilling a $100,000 reward promise following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where they secured an unprecedented fifth consecutive continental title.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission (NSC), under the leadership of its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has continued to pursue reforms aimed at improving sports administration, athlete welfare and Nigeria’s international sporting profile.
The Commission’s leadership has also overseen Nigeria’s hosting of approximately 30 international sporting competitions, strengthening the country’s position as an emerging destination for major sporting events.
The NSC commended President Tinubu for his consistent encouragement and support for Nigerian athletes, noting that fulfilling reward commitments sends a strong message that excellence, dedication and national representation deserve tangible recognition.
It added that such gestures would boost athletes’ morale, strengthen confidence in sports administration and promote a culture of accountability, motivation and national pride.
