IPC WELCOMES RELEASE OF ABDUCTED JOURNALISTS, CONDEMNS UNENDING HARRASSMENT OF JOURNALISTS

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria is delighted that the News Crew of The Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) abducted by unknown gunmen on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, while covering the 2022 Enugu local government elections, have regained freedom.

They were reportedly attacked at Obeagu in Enugu South local government area on their way to Agbani, Nkanu West local government area.

Vanguard newspaper had on Wednesday reported that: “the media team comprises a driver, a cameraman, and three reporters. Also with them was a reporter with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN”.

Two of the ESBS reporters, Chiamaka Ezeaputa and Chigozie Alex-Nwafor and driver, Ebuka Ogbozor however escaped the abduction according to reports, which claimed they narrowly missed being killed.

IPC’s Executive Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade said: “It is pleasant news that they are back alive, but it remains extremely worrisome that journalists and other media professionals continue to fall prey to dangerous elements amidst the general insecurity in the country”.
