The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on bloggers, online publishers and digital content creators to uphold ethical journalism, responsible storytelling and fact-based reporting as they continue to shape public opinion in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital space.

Speaking at the Niger State Bloggers, Online Publishers and Content Developers Forum held in Abuja, the Minister stressed that while digital platforms have created unprecedented opportunities for innovation, civic participation and entrepreneurship, they must be used responsibly to advance truth, national unity and constructive public discourse.

“There is no democracy that can thrive without a responsible media. You cannot carry freedom and abandon responsibility,” Idris said, reaffirming the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to protecting press freedom while promoting professionalism and ethical standards in journalism.

He urged bloggers and content creators to verify information before publication, reject misinformation and disinformation, avoid sensational reporting, and leverage their platforms to educate, inspire and contribute positively to national development.

According to the Minister, young Nigerians should view digital content creation not only as a means of earning a livelihood but also as an important tool for civic engagement and nation-building, noting that ethical communication remains essential for strengthening democracy and sustaining public trust.

Idris also highlighted the establishment of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated exclusively to Media and Information Literacy, describing it as a landmark initiative that will enhance digital literacy and promote responsible online engagement across Nigeria and beyond.

He encouraged aspiring bloggers, online publishers and digital entrepreneurs to continue developing their professional skills while adhering to ethical standards that will enhance the credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s growing digital media ecosystem.
