“ Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia, a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law”- Nigeria

ABUJA — The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the recent attack by Houthi militia in Yemen against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, describing the incident as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria was particularly concerned that the attack in the Najran Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children.

Nigeria described the attack as “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law” and the fundamental principles governing the protection of civilians during armed conflicts.

The government reaffirmed its opposition to the escalation of violence in the region, stressing that attacks deliberately targeting civilian populations and infrastructure, regardless of the perpetrator, were unacceptable and must be condemned by the international community.

“Attacks that deliberately target civilian populations and civilian infrastructure irrespective of the perpetrator are unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned by the international community,” the statement said.

The Nigerian Government called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, respect international law and make the protection of civilians a priority.

Nigeria also urged renewed and intensified diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the conflict, while upholding the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of all states in the region, noting that the nation was closely monitoring developments and would continue to work with regional and international partners to promote peace, security and stability in the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
