The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intercepted a suspected vehicle fraud attempt in Gombe State, leading to the recovery of a car reported stolen since 2021.
The incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Office of the RS3.2 Gombe Sector Command during a routine number plate revalidation process. FRSC officials became suspicious after detecting discrepancies in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) presented in the applicant’s documents.
A detailed verification process, including a physical inspection, confirmed a mismatch between the submitted records and the vehicle’s chassis engraving, raising further red flags.
Using the NVIS platform, FRSC personnel traced the registered owner, identified as Cecilia A. Duru, who confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen in 2021 in Port Harcourt. She subsequently provided valid proof of ownership, confirming her claim.
The individual found in possession of the vehicle reportedly claimed to have purchased it from a third party, a development that has intensified suspicion surrounding the transaction.
FRSC officials acted swiftly to secure the vehicle and prevent its possible disappearance, underscoring the Corps’ growing intelligence capabilities and the effectiveness of the NVIS in tackling vehicle-related crimes.
The Corps advised members of the public to exercise due diligence when purchasing vehicles and to make use of official verification platforms to avoid falling victim to fraud.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to enhancing road safety and safeguarding vehicle ownership through technology-driven solutions and strict enforcement measures.
