The Federal Government has announced the commencement of the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial assistance to vulnerable households across the country.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the programme on Friday, October 30, 2026, stating that eligible beneficiaries would receive ₦50,000 monthly to cushion the impact of rising food prices and the increasing cost of essential goods.
According to the Minister, the intervention is a shock-responsive cash transfer programme aimed at providing basic financial relief to millions of vulnerable Nigerians and helping households achieve short-term economic stability.
Doro explained that the programme would be reviewed regularly in response to prevailing economic conditions and changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustments are made.
He said the Ministry was collaborating with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure that payments are delivered securely, promptly and transparently.
Under the arrangement, eligible beneficiaries would receive SMS notifications from designated financial service providers seeking their consent. Upon confirmation, the funds would be transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
The Minister noted that NERSI complements existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening household resilience and economic stability under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He acknowledged the economic difficulties confronting many Nigerians and assured that the Ministry would implement the intervention with dignity, transparency and accountability.
Doro further clarified that beneficiaries are not required to submit applications, pay registration fees or engage agents to access the programme.
He warned Nigerians against fraudulent activities, advising prospective beneficiaries never to disclose their personal identification numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone.
The Minister urged members of the public who have concerns about programme-related messages or encounters with individuals demanding money to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
Further information and official updates on the intervention are available on the Ministry’s website at www.fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi/.
