Cricket: Central Eagles Edge Thriller as Southern Sharks Roar Back in Nigeria Super League

Match Day 2 of the Nigeria Super League produced high drama, explosive batting displays and tense finishes as teams battled for supremacy at the TBS Cricket Oval.

The day’s biggest spectacle came in Match 3, where Central Eagles survived a late scare to defeat Eastern Elephants by just one run in a pulsating encounter that went down to the final ball.

Batting first after being sent in, Central Eagles posted an impressive 157/4 in 20 overs, powered by a magnificent innings from wicketkeeper-batsman Selim Salau. Salau anchored the innings with a commanding 83 off 61 balls, striking four boundaries and seven sixes in a knock that proved decisive.

Following the early loss of Happy Bagshaw, Mohammed Moshood and Emmanuel Boniface Oche stabilised the innings before Useni Prosper provided late fireworks with an unbeaten 22 from only nine deliveries.

Eastern Elephants mounted a spirited chase, with Paul Pam and Rahmon Ali attacking positively at the top of the order. However, disciplined spells from Ifeanyi Uboh and Azeez Warees kept the Eagles in contention throughout the innings.

Ipoli Victor nearly snatched victory for the Elephants with a brilliant counterattacking 52 off 35 balls, setting up a nerve-racking finish. But Central Eagles held their composure in the closing stages, executing crucial run-outs to restrict Eastern Elephants to 156/9 and secure a dramatic one-run triumph.

Selim Salau was named Player of the Match for his match-winning innings.
In Match 4, Southern Sharks bounced back emphatically from their opening defeat with a dominant 48-run victory over Western Dolphins.

After electing to bat first, Southern Sharks amassed 176/7 in 20 overs — one of the highest totals recorded in the competition so far.

Isesele Odion Evangel led the assault with a blistering 54 off 31 balls, smashing 11 boundaries in an aggressive display of stroke play. Kenneth Boniface added momentum late in the innings with a rapid 47 from 25 balls, while Akhigbe Miracle contributed a valuable 28.

Western Dolphins fought back with the ball through Udekwe Chiemelie and Monday Elijah, who claimed two wickets apiece, but the Sharks maintained their scoring rate throughout the innings.
Chasing 177, Western Dolphins struggled to recover after losing early wickets despite captain Vincent Adewoye’s spirited 35 off 21 balls. Destiny Chilemanya and Udekwe Chiemelie attempted to revive the chase, but Southern Sharks’ bowlers remained in control.

Ayeni Precious and Ismail Abdullahi both picked up two wickets, while Akhigbe Miracle completed an impressive all-round performance as Western Dolphins were bowled out for 128 in 16.4 overs.

For his explosive half-century and match-defining contribution, Isesele Odion Evangel was named Player of the Match.
