China Approves RMB 200 Million Grant to Support Nigeria’s Development

ABUJA, August 13, 2026 — China has announced a RMB 200 million grant assistance package for Nigeria as both countries seek to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and advance cooperation in key areas of national development.
The announcement was made when the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Yu Dunhai, met with the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dunoma Umar Ahmed, in Abuja on Thursday.
Ambassador Yu said China-Nigeria relations had remained at the forefront of China-Africa cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 55 years ago.
He noted that, under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the bilateral relationship had entered a new phase of high-quality development.
According to him, China and Nigeria have maintained close communication and coordination while working to implement agreements reached by the two heads of state as well as the outcomes of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
He said the efforts were aimed at ensuring that the benefits of bilateral cooperation continued to reach the peoples of both countries.
“China will provide RMB 200 million in grant assistance to Nigeria for the implementation of projects agreed upon by the two governments,” Ambassador Yu said.
The Chinese envoy said the assistance was intended to further support Nigeria’s national development and economic growth.
Responding, Dr. Ahmed expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for China’s continued support for the country’s economic and social development.
He said the grant demonstrated China’s commitment as a major global partner and reflected the strong friendship between Nigeria and China.
The Permanent Secretary assured that Nigeria would ensure effective utilisation of the grant and work closely with the Chinese government to implement the common understandings reached on bilateral cooperation.
He added that Nigeria remained committed to further strengthening Nigeria-China friendship and ensuring that bilateral cooperation delivered greater benefits to citizens of both countries.
The latest development comes as Nigeria and China continue to expand cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment, energy, technology and other strategic sectors.
