The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has called on state-level signage regulatory agencies to harmonise their policies and operational guidelines with national advertising standards to eliminate conflicting directives and promote a more coordinated industry.
The Director-General of ARCON, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, made the call at the 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from August 6 to 8, 2026.
The AGM, themed “OOH Media in Political Campaign Season: Policies, Politics, and Fair Practice,” brought together key stakeholders and professionals in the advertising and marketing communications industry to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities facing the Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising sector, particularly ahead of the political campaign season.
Fadolapo stressed the need for greater collaboration between ARCON and state signage authorities, noting that harmonised policies would provide clarity for practitioners, reduce regulatory conflicts and strengthen compliance with established national advertising standards.
He also emphasised the importance of professionalism and responsible practice in the OOH advertising sector, especially as political activities and campaigns intensify.
The OAAN President, Sola Akinsiku, alongside other industry leaders, including Dr Theodore Okwunicheta, Ejikeme Ekechi, Chairman of the Marketing and Media Group, Dozie Okafor, President of the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), Tolulope Medebem, and President of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), joined the call for greater adherence to professional standards.
The stakeholders reaffirmed the need to protect the integrity of the OOH advertising industry through ethical practices, regulatory compliance and cooperation among industry operators and government agencies.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to examine the role of OOH advertising during political campaigns and promote fair, transparent and professionally regulated advertising practices.
