APPMEN Urges Accountability, Inclusive Development as 2027 Campaigns Begin

The Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called on governments at all levels to accelerate the completion of abandoned and ongoing projects and fulfil campaign promises as political parties prepare to begin campaigns for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by its National Secretariat ahead of the August 7, 2026 commencement of campaigns, in line with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, the association urged leaders to ensure the honest implementation of at least 50 per cent of the promises made during the last election cycle.
According to APPMEN, delivering on campaign commitments would help restore public confidence in governance and strengthen citizens’ trust ahead of the January 2027 general elections.
The association stressed that leaders must place national interest above personal and political considerations, calling for renewed efforts to restore Nigeria’s standing as the “Giant of Africa.”
APPMEN also advocated policies that promote national unity, saying governments and stakeholders should champion values that inspire respect for Nigeria and its citizens across Africa and the global community.
Highlighting economic priorities, the media proprietors’ body called for greater youth empowerment and the creation of an enabling environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), describing them as critical drivers of economic growth and stability.
The association noted that Nigeria’s abundant human and natural resources remain largely untapped and urged governments to harness them to create jobs, stimulate businesses, and improve citizens’ living standards.
While commending political leaders for what it described as “monumental accomplishments” over the past three years, APPMEN challenged them to intensify efforts toward delivering greater dividends of democracy.
The organisation also appealed to citizens and other stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, saying achieving a prosperous Nigeria requires collective responsibility.
Ahead of the election campaigns, APPMEN urged political parties and candidates to avoid hate speech, violence, and other actions capable of undermining peace, insisting that campaigns should focus on issues and policy alternatives rather than personal attacks.
“Elections should not be seen as a do-or-die affair. We need each other now and after the polls,” the association stated.
APPMEN further called on governments at all levels to demonstrate transparency and accountability by ensuring that the substantial public funds received over the past three years are reflected in visible projects that have positively impacted citizens.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national development, describing itself as “an indispensable companion in the building of the Nigeria we want.”
