The All Progressives Congress Initiative for Good Governance (APC-IGG) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly to urgently introduce legislation that would establish a federal government presence in all 774 local government councils across Nigeria.

The appeal was made by the National President of APC-IGG, Ambassador Musa Muhammed Tsoken, in a statement issued in Abuja, where he described the proposed reform as a critical step towards improving accountability, transparency and effective governance at the grassroots.

According to Tsoken, the initiative comes at a time when debates over local government autonomy and fiscal responsibility remain central to Nigeria’s governance agenda.

He explained that the proposed legislation would create a structured federal presence in local government councils to strengthen oversight, enhance monitoring of council activities and ensure that statutory allocations are effectively utilised for the benefit of citizens.
“The absence of effective oversight mechanisms has, over time, weakened governance at the local level. This bill is expected to serve as a corrective instrument to guarantee that resources meant for the people are transparently and efficiently managed,” Tsoken said.

The APC-IGG president urged President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, ALGON National Chairman Bello Lawal and other relevant stakeholders to support the proposed legislation.

He said the reforms would promote infrastructural development, boost agricultural productivity, improve healthcare delivery, strengthen fiscal accountability, and enhance security and education across the country’s local government areas.

Tsoken maintained that urgent legislative action was necessary to ensure that good governance reaches every community, stressing that effective grassroots administration remains essential to Nigeria’s overall development.
