The Bangladesh High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, has commemorated the death anniversary of legendary Bangladeshi Baul mystic, poet and philosopher, Fakir Lalon Shah, with a cultural event highlighting his enduring messages of humanity, equality, peace and spiritual freedom.
The event, held on October 17, 2026, at the High Commission’s Conference Hall, brought together diplomats, academics, cultural stakeholders, members of the Bangladeshi community and representatives of the Nigerian media to reflect on the life, philosophy and cultural contributions of Lalon Shah.
The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Miah Md. Mainul Kabir, chaired the occasion, while Professor Kamal Bello, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), delivered the keynote address as the guest speaker.
Also in attendance was Mr. Oru Leonard Oru, an ally and friend of Bangladesh, who joined other distinguished guests in celebrating the enduring legacy of the renowned philosopher.
Speakers at the event emphasised the timeless relevance of Lalon Shah’s songs and philosophical teachings, noting that his works promote universal values that transcend religious, ethnic, cultural and social boundaries.
They observed that Lalon Shah’s philosophy challenges discrimination and social divisions while advocating human dignity, mutual understanding, spiritual liberation and peaceful coexistence.
His songs, deeply rooted in the Baul tradition of Bengal, continue to inspire generations through their emphasis on the shared humanity of all people, regardless of caste, creed or social status.
The commemoration also provided an opportunity to explore the role of cultural heritage in strengthening international understanding, promoting dialogue and fostering closer relations between Bangladesh and Nigeria.
Participants included distinguished representatives of Nigeria’s Ministry of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, think tanks, youth organisations, the expatriate Bangladeshi community and members of the Nigerian media.
The event reaffirmed the enduring significance of Lalon Shah’s teachings and their relevance to contemporary society, particularly in promoting tolerance, inclusiveness, peace and harmony among diverse communities.
Through the commemoration, the Bangladesh High Commission in Abuja paid tribute to one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cultural and philosophical figures, whose message of humanity continues to resonate beyond national borders.
