NiMet DG Charles Anosike Elected President of ACMAD Board of Governors

COTONOU, BENIN — The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been elected President of the Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) for a four-year term.
Anosike’s election took place on September 10, 2026, in Cotonou, Benin, during the 24th Ordinary Session of the ACMAD Board of Governors, held alongside the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum (ACCOF22).
His emergence places Nigeria at the forefront of strategic efforts to strengthen meteorological and climate services across Africa, particularly at a time when the continent is facing increasing weather and climate-related risks.
As President of the Board, Anosike is expected to provide strategic leadership towards stronger institutional governance, productive partnerships and improved climate services, while supporting ACMAD’s mandate of promoting the effective application of weather and climate information for sustainable socio-economic development across Africa.
The election also reinforces NiMet’s growing role within Africa’s meteorological community and Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening weather and climate services for the protection of lives and property, climate resilience and sustainable economic development.
Anosike’s four-year tenure comes as African countries intensify efforts to improve their capacity to anticipate, prepare for and respond to climate and weather hazards, in line with the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative.
The 24th ACMAD Board session brought together members of the Board of Governors and key institutional partners to review the Centre’s progress and chart its strategic direction.
The high-level opening session featured the Director-General of ACMAD, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye; Vice-President of the ACMAD Board and Director of Niger Meteorological Services, Dr. Adamou Aïssatou Sitta; Director of the African Union Commission’s Department of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy (SEBE), Mr. Harsen Nyambe; and Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Transport, in charge of Sustainable Development, H.E. Georges Alé.
The development is expected to further deepen Nigeria’s contribution to continental cooperation in meteorology, climate information, disaster preparedness and resilience.
