NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Thunderstorms, Moderate Rains Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of the country from Monday, August 31, to Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The weather outlook, issued by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Sunday, August 30, is valid from 00:00 UTC on August 31 to 23:59 UTC on September 2.
For Monday, NiMet said isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over parts of Kebbi, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states, while other parts of the northern region are expected to experience partly cloudy skies in the morning.
By the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the North-West and parts of Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states.
In the North-Central region, cloudy weather with chances of morning rains is expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Benue and Niger states. Most parts of the region are expected to experience thunderstorms and moderate rains later in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet also forecast moderate morning rains across parts of Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and the South-Western states. More moderate rainfall is expected over most parts of the South later in the day.
For Tuesday, September 1, patches of clouds are expected across the North in the morning, with chances of moderate rains over parts of Taraba. Isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected over parts of Adamawa and Taraba later in the day.
The North-Central region is expected to have cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the morning, with moderate rains possible over parts of Benue and Kwara. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across most parts of the region in the afternoon and evening.
Across the South, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with moderate rains possible over the South-East and parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
Later in the day, moderate rains are expected over the South-East, South-South and parts of Oyo State.
On Wednesday, September 2, NiMet forecasts patches of clouds across the northern region in the morning, followed by scattered thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Bauchi later in the day.
The North-Central region is expected to remain cloudy, with chances of morning rains over parts of the FCT, Niger and Kwara states. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Kwara, Niger and Benue states.
In the South, cloudy conditions with chances of morning rains are expected over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Moderate rains are likely over the South-East and South-South later in the day, while other parts of the region are expected to remain cloudy with intervals of sunshine.
NiMet advised residents in areas expecting thunderstorms to exercise caution, noting that strong winds may precede rainfall.
The agency urged the public to fasten loose objects to prevent collisions and avoid driving during heavy rainfall. It also advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets and stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches or trees.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet to support effective operational planning.
NiMet further urged residents to remain alert and regularly follow its weather updates for timely information.
