Defence Ministry Reaffirms Commitment to Military Veterans’ Welfare, Pension Concerns

ABUJA, August 19, 2026 — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the welfare, remuneration and pension concerns of Nigeria’s military veterans.
In a statement signed by Barrister Henshaw Ogubuike, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, gave the assurance on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by representatives of military veterans to the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja.
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, acknowledged the sacrifices and distinguished service rendered by military veterans to the nation, stressing that their welfare remains a priority of government.
According to him, concerns surrounding wage and pension adjustments are receiving urgent attention, with relevant military, pension and financial authorities engaged to develop a fair, sustainable and implementable resolution.
General Musa appealed to the veterans to remain calm and patient while maintaining constructive engagement with the government, noting that sustained dialogue remains the most effective way of resolving outstanding issues.
He explained that any adjustment to veterans’ entitlements must be properly computed, adequately funded and implemented in line with existing approvals, regulations and due process.
This, he said, would ensure sustainability and prevent unintended disparities in the implementation of the entitlements.
The Minister assured the veterans that the Ministry would continue to engage with their representatives and provide updates as progress is made towards resolving the issues raised.
General Musa reiterated the Federal Government’s appreciation of the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of military veterans, stressing that their service to Nigeria must be recognised not only in words but through sustained attention to their welfare and legitimate entitlements.
