Defence Minister Meets Nigerian Ambassador in Washington, Deepens

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), OFR, has met with Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Kayode Are, as part of efforts to strengthen the longstanding defence and security partnership between Nigeria and the United States.
The strategic meeting, held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C., focused on deepening bilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, military modernisation, intelligence sharing and technical training.
General Musa underscored the importance of Nigeria’s continued diversification of international defence partnerships while maintaining its traditional strategic alliances.
He particularly highlighted the value of United States military technology, including advanced drone capabilities and satellite intelligence, in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Minister also stressed that Nigeria’s international defence engagements are being conducted with full respect for the country’s national sovereignty and strategic interests.
In his remarks, Ambassador Are commended the ongoing security sector reforms of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting stronger defence cooperation between both countries.
He said the Embassy would continue to facilitate diplomatic channels for enhanced technical training, intelligence sharing and equipment support for the Nigerian military.
The meeting also examined the evolving geopolitical and security situation in the Sahel, with both sides emphasising the need for stronger regional security frameworks to effectively address extremist threats.
After the engagement, General Musa inspected the Embassy’s Defence Section and commended the Defence Attaché, Air Commodore Valentine Oreaki, and his staff for their professionalism and commitment to duty.
He charged the personnel to sustain high standards of discipline, professionalism and dedication in representing the Armed Forces of Nigeria and advancing the country’s national interests.
The Minister’s visit formed part of a weeklong series of engagements in Washington, D.C., where he participated in a high-level Federal Government delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
