The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, with a renewed focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced early warning systems to improve weather and climate services.

The commitment was reached during a bilateral meeting between NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, and the Administrator and Director-General of the China Meteorological Administration, Dr. Chen Zhenlin, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council.

Both officials, who also serve as their respective countries’ Permanent Representatives to the WMO, agreed to advance collaboration through the adoption and customization of the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria.

They also pledged to leverage emerging AI technologies to enhance weather forecasting and climate services.

As part of the renewed partnership, both sides agreed to adopt a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will provide a framework for cooperation in the deployment of the MAZU platform, staff exchanges, joint research, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology research, knowledge exchange, and scholarship programmes.

The agreement is expected to strengthen the capacity of both institutions while promoting innovation and delivering mutual socioeconomic benefits through improved meteorological services and disaster preparedness.
