The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to become champions of transparency, accountability and prudent resource management, as part of efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline and promote sustainable national development across Nigeria.

The call was made during a nationwide sensitization campaign held at NYSC orientation camps in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and six states, including Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, Kogi and Kaduna, where thousands of corps members were engaged on the importance of responsible financial management.

Speaking through designated team leaders at the various camps, the Acting Chairman of the FRC, Barrister Charles Chukwuemeka Abana, said the initiative was aimed at building a generation of young Nigerians committed to accountability and good governance.
Delivering a keynote address on the theme, “Building a Stronger Nigeria Through Fiscal Responsibility,” Abana commended the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, for creating the opportunity for the Commission to interact with corps members despite the demanding orientation programme.

He emphasized that fiscal responsibility extends beyond government budgeting and public finance management, noting that it also involves how individuals manage personal and community resources.

According to him, fiscal discipline is not merely a policy requirement but a national value capable of driving economic stability, sustainable development and improved governance.

The Commission explained that, as an agency established under the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007, its mandate is to promote transparency, accountability and discipline in the management of public finances, while ensuring that government spending delivers value to citizens and national resources are deployed for the collective good.
Officials of the Commission also highlighted the FRC’s achievements in strengthening oversight of government revenues and expenditures, improving compliance among Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and raising public awareness about the importance of fiscal responsibility.

While acknowledging progress made over the years, the Commission stressed that achieving full fiscal accountability requires active participation from all Nigerians.

Corps members were therefore encouraged to cultivate sound financial habits, promote transparency in their communities and serve as advocates of fiscal responsibility in both public and private spheres.

The FRC also drew attention to Section 51 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which empowers citizens to seek legal enforcement of the Act’s provisions, describing it as an important tool for strengthening accountability and good governance.

Participants were further urged to uphold integrity, engage actively in community development projects and contribute meaningfully to national development during and after their service year.

The sensitization sessions featured interactive discussions during which corps members sought clarification on fiscal responsibility and the Commission’s mandate. FRC officials provided detailed responses and practical insights into the principles of fiscal discipline and their relevance to everyday life.

To encourage participation, corps members who correctly answered questions based on the presentations were rewarded with airtime gifts.

The campaign concluded with a renewed call on corps members to serve as ambassadors of fiscal responsibility and play active roles in fostering a more transparent, accountable and prosperous Nigeria.
