Abuja, June 9, 2026 — The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that President Bola Tinubu remains committed to building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria through the implementation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja on Tuesday as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Idris described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, assess national progress and reaffirm commitment to democratic governance and development.

According to the minister, this year’s Democracy Day is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, providing Nigerians with an opportunity to review the impact of ongoing reforms and evaluate the nation’s development trajectory.

He noted that Democracy Day remains a symbol of the country’s democratic resilience and a time to honour the sacrifices of individuals who fought for democratic rule in Nigeria.

Idris paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola and other democracy heroes whose struggles helped secure the democratic freedoms enjoyed by Nigerians today. He also acknowledged President Tinubu and several pro-democracy activists for their contributions to the restoration and consolidation of democratic governance.

The minister described Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule as a major national achievement, stressing that it reflects the determination of citizens to uphold democratic values and strengthen national institutions.

“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance is a milestone worthy of celebration. It is a testament to the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values, strengthen national institutions, and continuously strive for a more prosperous and united nation,” he said.

He added that the administration remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity, expanding economic opportunities and delivering sustainable development through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Also speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who represented President Tinubu and chairs the Interministerial Committee on Democracy Day 2026, described the country’s uninterrupted democratic journey as evidence of the resilience of both the Nigerian people and democratic institutions.

Akume said the administration’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, were difficult but necessary measures aimed at creating fiscal space for investments in critical sectors.

He stated that the reforms have enabled increased funding for infrastructure, education, healthcare, social interventions and economic development, expressing confidence that Nigerians would increasingly benefit from the gains as revenues improve and the economy stabilises.

The press conference was attended by several government officials, including the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, as well as permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies.
