The 2026 National Schools Football Championship (NSFC) officially kicked off in Bauchi on Thursday with Brilliant Academy Toro defeating Ni’imah High School Magama 1-0 in the opening match at the historic Toro Township Stadium.

The highly anticipated competition opened with both teams showing strong attacking intent and determination, but Brilliant Academy Toro made the breakthrough to claim the first victory of the nationwide tournament.

Bauchi was selected to host the ceremonial kickoff in recognition of its long-standing football culture and its connection to former Super Eagles player and NSFC coordinator, Patrick Pascal.

Speaking after the opening match, founder of the KickStart Sports Foundation and organiser of the championship, Ibrahim Bello, said the choice of Bauchi reflects the competition’s commitment to discovering hidden football talents across Nigeria.
“We didn’t come to Bauchi because it was convenient,” Bello stated. “We came to Bauchi because this is exactly where Nigerian football talent is hiding — on sandy pitches, in the heat, and in schools that scouts have never visited. NSFC 2026 is designed to change that.”

Bello described the National Schools Football Championship as Nigeria’s first fully structured secondary school football tournament endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation and aligned with the International School Sport Federation.

He explained that the tournament is taking place simultaneously across the country’s geopolitical zones and will climax with a national final at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in June 2026.

According to him, all participating players were age-verified through the National Identity Management Commission database, while matches are being officiated by certified NFF and CAF referees to ensure credibility and professionalism.

He added that all operational procedures, including fixtures, player welfare, and safeguarding protocols, were designed to meet international best practices.

The Bauchi kickoff marks the beginning of championship activities in schools across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as young football talents compete for national honours and opportunities for future development.
