“Journalists Are Key to Peaceful, Inclusive Society” — Minister Marks World Press Freedom Day

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has applauded journalists for their role in shaping a more just and inclusive society, describing the media as a powerful force for accountability and social change.
In a statement released by Ahmed Lawan Danbazau, Head of Press and Public Relations, the Minister joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, paying tribute to media professionals across Nigeria.
She acknowledged journalists as “indispensable partners” in promoting the welfare of women, children, families, and vulnerable populations, as well as key actors in addressing gender-based violence.
Highlighting the significance of the annual observance, Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that it provides an opportunity to reaffirm the value of a free and responsible press in advancing human rights and national development.
Speaking on the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” the Minister stressed that journalists play a crucial role in fostering truth, justice, and social cohesion.
She reiterated that the Ministry’s initiatives—ranging from social protection programmes to family-focused interventions—are aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister also pointed to the declaration of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development as a bold step toward strengthening partnerships and expanding social impact nationwide.
Describing the media as a bridge between government and citizens, she urged journalists to maintain high standards of professionalism and continue telling stories that promote unity, accountability, and national progress.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed her commitment to deepening collaboration with the media in the collective effort to build a society where no one is left behind.
