Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Anti-Foreigner Protests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa in Abuja following rising tensions linked to protests against foreigners in the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry confirmed that the envoy has been invited for a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at its headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the meeting aims to formally communicate the Nigerian Government’s deep concern over recent developments that could strain the long-standing diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
The Ministry noted that discussions will centre on the ongoing demonstrations by groups in South Africa, as well as reported cases of harassment, attacks, and mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and their businesses.
While acknowledging growing outrage among Nigerians over the situation, the government urged citizens to remain calm, assuring that it is committed to safeguarding the rights, safety, and welfare of Nigerians living in South AfricaThe development comes amid renewed scrutiny of xenophobic incidents in South Africa, which have in the past tested diplomatic ties between both countries.
