Nigeria Dominates Across Multiple Sports During Weekend Performances

Nigeria enjoyed a highly successful weekend on the international sports stage, recording outstanding achievements across wrestling, football, and athletics.

In wrestling, Team Nigeria delivered a commanding performance at the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, emerging as overall winners in the women’s category for a record-extending 15th time. The team secured an impressive haul of eight gold and two silver medals out of the ten available, underlining their continued dominance on the continent.

On the men’s side, Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo produced a memorable upset victory over Egyptian home favourite Mohamed Mostafa, winning 10–4. His performance contributed to Nigeria finishing third overall in the men’s team standings, ensuring a podium finish for the country.

In football, Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, took a significant step toward qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a confident 2–0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their final qualifying round in Ikenne-Remo. The result puts Nigeria firmly in control as they aim to extend their remarkable record of qualifying for every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002.

Meanwhile, on the track, Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team delivered a historic performance at the World Relays in Gaborone. The quartet of Favour Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson clocked 40.24 seconds to finish fourth in Heat 1, setting a new African record and securing qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China.

These achievements highlight a strong and promising period for Nigerian sports, showcasing excellence, resilience, and continued progress across multiple disciplines.
