FG Inducts New Envoys, Demands Results-Driven Diplomacy

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has commenced the induction of newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners-designate, charging them to deliver measurable outcomes that advance Nigeria’s national interests.
The induction programme, which began on Monday in Abuja, is aimed at equipping the envoys with the knowledge and skills required for effective diplomatic service, including foreign policy priorities, mission administration, consular duties, and multilateral engagement.
Speaking at the opening session, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, congratulated the envoys on their appointments, noting that their selection reflects the confidence reposed in them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She described the diplomats as Nigeria’s representatives and strategic actors abroad, whose conduct would shape the country’s global image and strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged the envoys to align their work with the administration’s foreign policy framework anchored on the 4Ds—Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora—while prioritising economic diplomacy. She called on them to attract foreign investment, boost trade and tourism, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts.
The minister also emphasised the importance of efficient consular services, stressing that Nigerians in the diaspora must experience responsive and protective representation through the country’s missions abroad. She highlighted the need for prompt service delivery, effective crisis response, and sustained engagement with Nigerian communities.
In addition, she underscored the need for professionalism, integrity, discipline, and accountability in managing diplomatic missions, warning that diplomatic privileges must not be abused.
Delivering a keynote address on behalf of President Tinubu, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the appointments as a “sacred national responsibility.” He noted that Nigeria’s foreign policy has been repositioned to place citizens at the centre, urging the envoys to ensure tangible benefits for Nigerians through their assignments.
Akume further charged the diplomats to uphold patriotism, respect for host countries’ laws and cultures, and unwavering loyalty to Nigeria while advancing the nation’s strategic interests globally.
Representatives of the National Assembly also delivered goodwill messages, pledging legislative support for Nigeria’s missions abroad while emphasising accountability, financial prudence, and strict adherence to regulations.
The induction programme will continue with technical sessions covering diplomatic practice, protocol, consular affairs, economic diplomacy, security coordination, and the role of spouses in diplomatic service.
The ceremony, according to the ministry, reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic corps and ensuring its envoys deliver proactive, purposeful, and result-oriented representation on the global stage.
