The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigeria Police Force have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at enhancing the safety of corps members across the country.
Director-General of NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Nafiu congratulated the IGP on his appointment and lauded the recent inauguration of a special police tactical team, describing it as a step in the right direction for national security.
He noted that the Police have remained a critical partner in the successful implementation of NYSC programmes since inception, while appealing for sustained protection of corps members and officials, both within orientation camps and in their places of primary assignment.
The DG also called for enhanced security of corps lodges and personal property of corps members, particularly as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
On policy matters, Nafiu raised the issue of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, noting that members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies are statutorily exempt from national service. He expressed the desire for closer engagement with the academy’s management to facilitate compliance.
In his response, Disu assured that the Police would continue to provide adequate security for the Scheme. He added that the Force already maintains records of corps lodges nationwide to enable swift response when necessary.
The IGP described the proposal for exemption certificates for Police Academy graduates as a welcome development and pledged continued cooperation with the NYSC.
