Transportation has been described as the backbone of national development and the most important aspect of daily life, as stakeholders gathered at Jabi Park for the ongoing Drivers’ Care Initiative in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the outreach programme, the FCT Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Barrister Elechi Chinedum, emphasized that no nation can thrive without a strong and well-supported transport system. According to him, drivers and transport operators remain central to economic growth and social connectivity.
“Transportation is the most important aspect of our life. It moves the economy, connects families, and sustains businesses. When you support transporters, you support the nation,” he stated.
The event, organised by Transporters for Tinubu 2027, is part of a week-long Drivers’ Care Initiative running from 26 February to 6 March 2026 across major motor parks in Abuja. The programme offers free eye tests, sensitisation on drug abuse, and access to soft loans through the Transporters Cooperative Society.
National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu 2027, Prince Segun Obayendo, also addressed the gathering, reminding drivers that their welfare remains a priority. He reiterated his long-standing connection with the transport community and urged participants to take full advantage of the health and financial support services provided.
At the Jabi Park session, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) turned out in large numbers, following earlier engagements with RTEAN and NARTO members.
Barrister Chinedum encouraged drivers to prioritise their health and safety, particularly by undergoing eye examinations and avoiding alcohol and drug use while on duty.
“Keep yourselves safe. If you need glasses, get them. Avoid alcohol and drugs while driving. Your safety is the safety of your passengers,” he cautioned.
He further highlighted the administration’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure within the FCT, referencing ongoing projects such as the construction of modern bus terminals in Mabushi, Kugbo, and the Central Area to enhance operational standards and working conditions.
Chairman of NURTW FCT, Prince Dauda Abdulakadir, commended the organisers for taking the initiative directly to grassroots transporters. He encouraged unity among members and sustained engagement as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
Other stakeholders at the event described transporters as the economic lifeline of the nation, stressing that initiatives focused on their welfare are timely and necessary.
