Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has called for transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in the electoral process to strengthen democracy and build public trust.
In a statement, NAWOJ President, Aisha Ibrahim K. Bura, emphasized the importance of credible, fair, and transparent elections, citing their crucial role in ensuring citizen participation and peaceful acceptance of outcomes.
The association identified challenges hindering the electoral process, including gender bias, disinformation, and limited access to information, and urged stakeholders to take concrete steps to address these issues.
NAWOJ’s call comes ahead of forthcoming elections, as the country seeks to improve its democratic processes and build trust in institutions.
The association’s demands include media reforms, civic education, and digital responsibility to promote peace and transparency during elections.
By advocating for women’s participation and amplifying their voices, NAWOJ aims to promote broader social trust and legitimacy in democracy.
Highlight of the event was the signing of MoU between IPC, NAWOJ and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) on creating the enabling environment for the impactful reporting of elections in the context of inclusivity and the public interest.
The MOU seeks to establish performance benchmarks aimed at enhancing accountability and professional standards in media reporting—particularly on gender-related electoral issues and campaign commitment.
