INEC Announces Timetable for Bye-Elections, Voter Registration, and FCT Area Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced a busy schedule of electoral activities, including bye-elections, voter registration, and preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Area Council elections.
See Bye-Elections time table:
– Date: Saturday, August 16
– Constituencies: 16 constituencies across 12 states
– Purpose: To fill vacant legislative seats due to resignations, demise of lawmakers, and court-ordered re-runs in parts of Anambra and Kano States
Voter Registration:
– Continuous Voter Registration (CVR): Resumes on Monday, August 18
– Online Pre-Registration: Kicks off on August 18
– Physical Registration: Commences on August 25 at 811 INEC offices nationwide
– Purpose: To allow voters to register, transfer polling units, or replace damaged or lost PVCs
FCT Area Council Elections:
– Date: February 21, 2026
– Candidates: 637 candidates from 17 political parties for 68 positions (6 chairmanship and 62 councillorship slots)
– Display of Candidate Information: August 18 – September 22
– Final List of Candidates: To be published on September 22
INEC urges political parties, candidates, and voters to “play by the rules” to guarantee a peaceful and credible process. The commission also warns against multiple registration, which remains a criminal offence.
