INEC Concludes CVR Exercise in Anambra State with 168,187 New Registrants

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has concluded the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), exercise in Anambra State, recording 168,187 new registrants. This is the highest number recorded within two weeks in the state since INEC introduced the process in 2017.
This was disclosed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr. Sam Olumekun, mni, in a statement issued on Thursday, July 24, 2025, following the Commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.
According to Mr. Olumekun, the CVR, which was initially scheduled to end on July 17th, was extended by three days to July 20th, 2025, in response to appeals from stakeholders. The turnout, he said, reflected the growing interest of citizens in the electoral process ahead of the forthcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State.
“Although these are preliminary figures pending data clean-up, the detailed breakdown shows that 97,832 (58%) are female, while 70,355 (42%) are male,” he stated. “In terms of age, 90,763 (53.97%) are young people between 18 and 34 years old.”
Breakdown of New Registrants are:
Female Registrants, 97,832 (58%); Male Registrants, 70,355 (42%) and, Young People (18-34 years old), 90,763 (53.97%);
Occupational Breakdown are as follows:
Businessmen and Women, 62,157 (36.92%); Students, 44,243 (26.31%); Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), 303 registrants reported physical impediments, while 207 identified as persons with albinism
The preliminary register of voters will be displayed across the 326 Wards in Anambra State from July 26 to August 1, 2025, for public inspection and claims or objections.
INEC will deploy ABIS to weed out multiple or ineligible entries, PVCs for new registrants will be ready ahead of the election.
Olumekun disclosed that INEC has completed internal testing of a newly developed online portal for political party registration.
“INEC is evaluating 144 letters of intent from political associations to determine which meet the constitutional and legal criteria to proceed to the next stage of registration”, he concluded.
