Tragedy struck on Monday, November 18, 2024, when a team of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) monitoring team came under heavy attack by Boko Haram terrorists in Kaduna State. The team, consisting of 9 officers and 71 other ranks, was on an inspection mission to assess the damage to the National Grid Installation in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
While returning from their surveillance, the NSCDC team encountered stranded expatriates near Dagwachi Village and offered them protection. Unbeknownst to them, over 200 Boko Haram elements had laid an ambush at Farin-Kasa Area of Chukun LGA in Kaduna. The terrorists opened fire from a hilltop using sophisticated weapons.
Despite being ambushed, the NSCDC operatives bravely repelled the attack, neutralizing over 50 terrorists. Unfortunately, 7 operatives are currently missing in action, and efforts are underway to locate them. Others injured during the attack are receiving medical treatment.
The Commandant General of NSCDC condemned the attack as “callous” and “unfortunate.” He reiterated the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, praising the operatives’ courage and gallantry.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria’s security forces in combating terrorism and protecting critical infrastructure. The country recently experienced a total blackout due to attacks on the National Grid, prompting the establishment of the Special Monitoring Squad.
