The 2026 Phase One Division One National League of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) got off to an exciting start as Lights Spikers Volleyball Club recorded a commanding 3-0 victory over Wikki Spikers Volleyball Club at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The Abuja-based side displayed dominance throughout the encounter, winning in straight sets 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 to secure an impressive opening-day triumph.

Lights Spikers controlled proceedings from the outset, taking the first set 25-20 before facing a more determined challenge from Wikki Spikers in the second set. However, the team maintained composure at crucial moments to seal the set 25-19.

Riding on the momentum of the first two sets, Lights Spikers returned strongly in the third set, closing out the game 25-21 to complete the sweep.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Uthman Mohammed described the victory as a strong statement from a team many had underrated ahead of the competition.
“It was a good game. Wikki Spikers gave their best, and so did we. Many people saw us as underdogs. I told them to watch out for our return,” he said.

Mohammed noted that the team’s success was built on discipline, preparation, and unity, adding that the players spent seven weeks in camp preparing for the league.
“What I have inculcated in the players is one spirit, one team, one goal. Volleyball is a collective game,” he added.

In other fixtures, Kwara United Volleyball Club failed to honour their match against Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), resulting in a 3-0 walkover in favour of NIS.

Similarly, the Bayelsa Volleyball Association did not show up for their tie against Katsina United Volleyball Club, handing Katsina United a 3-0 walkover victory too.

The National Sports Commission notes that the Phase One Division Two National League and the women’s category are scheduled to commence on Monday.

The championship, which began on Saturday, the 23rd of May, features 11 teams in Division One and seven teams in Division Two and will run until June 5 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja
