The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, FAS, mni, has called on all and sundry to support federal universities to achieve their teaching, learning and research mandates without compromising standards.

The Vice-Chancellor said this when he commissioned the self-help renovated Head of Department’s office in the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education.

According to him, poor funding is adversely affecting the federal universities as the government keeps giving inadequate funds and making policies that are very limiting to tertiary institutions. He noted that adequate funding is very critical to sustaining tertiary institutions and making teaching and learning conducive.

In a bid to sustain the legacy of Nigerian tertiary institutions, Prof. Adebowale called on private institutions and individuals to support the three government interventions: Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Needs Assessment, and Capital Appropriation Grant, that the federal government had made available to institutions.

In his words: “government alone cannot run universities; some hands must have to come to support. We run around to scout for funds for the university.”

The VC said he was, therefore, pleased to commission the multimillion-naira self-help project that was donated by alumni and friends of the Department of Human Kinetics.

Earlier in his speech, the Head of Department, Prof. O. A. Adegbesan had said that the project was one of the ways to support the department. He added that the donors were happy to accomplish the projects and sustain the department.
