TCN Declares Force Majeure as 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Line Collapses

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a Force Majeure Event on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line following the collapse of a transmission tower along the corridor.
The incident occurred after the transmission line tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. A trial reclosure attempted at 11:07 p.m. was unsuccessful, as the line tripped again.
Following the second trip, TCN linesmen from the Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region commenced a fault-finding patrol along the transmission corridor.
On Tuesday, September 8, the team discovered that Tower T367 had collapsed.
According to TCN, preliminary findings indicate that heavy winds and rainstorms in the area caused the tower to collapse.
The incident has disrupted the transmission of bulk electricity through the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission corridor.
TCN said the Force Majeure declaration became necessary because the damage was caused by a natural disaster beyond the company’s control.
The company said it has commenced arrangements to mobilise personnel, equipment and other resources to the affected location to rehabilitate the collapsed tower and restore the transmission line within the shortest possible time.
Meanwhile, TCN said electricity transmission to Sokoto has been maintained through an alternative transmission route.
According to the company, the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor is currently receiving supply through an alternative path from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line.
TCN apologised for the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers and other stakeholders affected by the incident.
The company assured the public that it is making every effort to restore normal bulk power transmission service as quickly as possible.
