Speedy Passage of Electoral Act Amendment Bill will Enhance the Electoral Process – Prof Yakubu

Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yakubu Mahmoud is requesting for speedy passage of the electoral Act Amendment bill ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Chairman of the Commission, Mahmoud Yakubu made the request amongst others when he appeared before the Kabiru Gaya led Senate committee on INEC on Thursday for screening as Chairman of the Commission for another five year tenure.

Appearing before the senate committee on Thursday for screening, Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yakubu Mamoud said the electoral body is faced with series of challenges that could hamper the 2023 general elections if not taken care of.

The Committee members quizzed him on what the Body has achieved over time and what they intend to change to avoid lapses going forward especially on the provision for riverine areas and Nigerians in diaspora.

Mahmood Yakubu identified 1,508 activities which he says needs only 813 days to deliver, part of which include need for speedy passage of the electoral Act amendment bill, repairs of damaged logistics and lack of amenities to function effectively bearing in mind that the electoral body plans to go digital ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The report of the screening is to be submitted to the Senate on Tuesday for confirmation after consideration in the committee of a whole
