The Director-General/CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has called for strategic collaboration with the University of Benin (UNIBEN) as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the institute and make Nigeria’s sports sector globally competitive.

According a statement made available to News Dit Africa by Mr. Ben Ogbemudia,
S. A. Media to fhe DG NIS, Shaibu made the call during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Professor Edoba Omoregie SAN, where he outlined the historical foundation, challenges, and ongoing reforms at the NIS.

He explained that the institute, originally established with a strong vision by its founders, was designed as the “engine” of Nigeria’s sports development, responsible for training coaches, referees, sports administrators, and paramedics, as well as providing academic instruction through its teaching staff.

According to him, the NIS once played a central role in preparing national teams, including the Green Eagles, with athletes camped and medically assessed at its facilities ahead of international competitions.

“Sports is a science, and the NIS was structured to reflect that, including the training of nutritionists and other specialists. Unfortunately, over time, the core mandate of the institute was neglected,” Shaibu said.

He noted that past efforts to revive the institute, including the establishment of the Athletes Development Centre in Abuja during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, did not achieve the desired impact despite its promising concept.

Shaibu, however, said the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the institute a clear mandate to bridge existing gaps and restore its relevance.

“Upon assumption of office, what we met was not encouraging, but through collaboration with staff and private sector partners, we have made the environment more conducive and initiated critical reforms,” he stated.

The DG disclosed that the institute has reviewed and strengthened its curriculum to meet present-day demands, introduced new courses, and is exploring alternative funding sources to ensure financial independence.

He added that a 10-year development plan has been developed by experts to serve as a guiding framework, with emphasis on adopting private sector-driven strategies and promoting internal revenue generation.

As part of its expansion drive, Shaibu revealed that six zonal offices have been established across the country, with Edo State serving as the South-South hub, alongside the recruitment of additional personnel to boost capacity.

Highlighting the purpose of the visit, he said the NIS is seeking collaboration with UNIBEN in areas such as degree-awarding programmes, exchange initiatives, and shared use of facilities.

“It is part of our vision for the NIS to become a degree-awarding institution. We have already partnered with the Nigeria Football Federation for CAF B and C certifications, and we believe UNIBEN is a critical partner as we move forward,” he said.

The NIS Boss also disclosed plans to introduce inclusive certification programmes targeted at experienced but uneducated athletes, enabling them to transition into coaching through oral-based training and assessments.

“We are determined to address the issue of unregulated coaching on the streets by providing structured opportunities for skill development and certification,” he added.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie SAN welcomed the Director General and commended his achievements, expressing confidence in his leadership.

He noted that UNIBEN possesses quality sports facilities, though some require upgrades to meet current standards, and described the proposed collaboration as timely.

“This engagement is significant. We are ready to improve our facilities, share experiences, and leverage your expertise for mutual benefit,” Omoregie said.

The VC also expressed support for the proposed academic collaboration, particularly in curriculum development and degree programmes, assuring the NIS of the university’s willingness to work together towards achieving shared goals.

The NIS management on the visit include Mrs. Nyakno Oluokun FCA, Bursar, Dr. Maryam Nasko, Head of Administration, Dr. Remu Majoroh, Consultant, Aisha Adogah, PPS to the DG, Charles Olubayo, PA/ ICT to the DG, Dr. Oyakhire Rasheed, South South Coordinator and others.
