The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has described Samson Adamu’s appointment as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and a significant boost to the country’s standing in African football administration.

Olopade, while congratulating Adamu on his emergence, said the appointment marked a historic milestone, as a Nigerian would be occupying the influential position for the first time in CAF’s 70-year history.

He noted that Adamu’s elevation reflected his professional competence, years of dedication and wealth of experience in football administration, adding that the development should inspire young Nigerians aspiring to leadership positions in international sports organisations.

According to the NSC Director General, the appointment is not only a source of national pride but also evidence of Nigeria’s capacity to produce professionals capable of contributing to the growth and administration of sports at the continental and global levels.

“On behalf of all Nigerians, I congratulate Samson Adamu on this appointment. It is a proud moment for Nigeria. It is encouraging to see a Nigerian rise to such a strategic position in African football through years of hard work, competence and commitment,” Olopade said.

He expressed confidence that Adamu’s experience in organising and managing football competitions would strengthen CAF’s administration, particularly as African football continues to expand its commercial opportunities, international profile and global influence.

Olopade further said the development aligns with the National Sports Commission’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a major contributor to global sports governance and administration.

Adamu previously served CAF in various capacities, including Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments and Events, before assuming the position of Acting General Secretary on March 29, 2026, following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba.

The NSC boss wished Adamu success in his new assignment, urging him to uphold the values of professionalism and excellence while serving as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria.
