NSIB Launches Investigation into Runway Excursion at Benin Airport

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft at Benin Airport, Edo State, as part of efforts to determine the circumstances that led to the incident and enhance aviation safety.
The aircraft reportedly veered off the runway after landing at the airport on Thursday, prompting an immediate emergency response from aviation authorities. Emergency personnel swiftly evacuated all passengers and crew members, with no fatalities or serious injuries recorded.
According to the NSIB, a team of investigators has been deployed to the scene to conduct an on-site assessment, secure critical evidence, recover flight data where necessary, and interview the flight crew and other relevant stakeholders.
Director General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., said the investigation would focus on identifying the causal and contributory factors behind the runway excursion in line with the Bureau’s mandate of improving transport safety rather than assigning blame.
The Bureau urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is ongoing, assuring that updates would be provided as more verified information becomes available.
Aviation authorities also confirmed that emergency response procedures were activated immediately after the incident, while airport officials worked to restore normal operations following the evacuation of passengers.
The NSIB, Nigeria’s independent transport accident investigation agency, is responsible for conducting objective investigations into aviation, maritime and railway occurrences with the aim of preventing future accidents through safety recommendations.
