The National Sports Commission (NSC), has endorsed the forthcoming Legends Football Game, a historic exhibition match that will bring together some of Nigeria’s finest football icons and celebrated African football greats in Lagos.
Scheduled for 8 November 2026 at the Onikan Stadium, the match will feature 15 Super Eagles legends from Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 squads against 13 African football legends in a contest designed to celebrate the enduring legacy of the continent’s football heroes.
Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the initiative as a laudable effort to honour the players whose achievements brought immense pride to Nigeria and helped shape the country’s football history.
Hon. Olopade said the Commission was pleased to support an event that recognises the contributions of the legends while providing an opportunity for a new generation of football fans to appreciate the players who laid the foundation for Nigeria’s success on the international stage.
“We cannot celebrate our football legends enough. The global recognition and positive image they brought to our country through their achievements cannot be quantified. They inspired generations of young Nigerians and continue to serve as role models for aspiring footballers.”
“This is why the National Sports Commission commends the organisers for such a laudable initiative, which provides a platform to honour these great ambassadors of our country and celebrate their enduring contributions to Nigerian football,” Hon. Olopade said.
The DG also called on football fans in Lagos and beyond to turn out in large numbers to celebrate the legends and relive some of the memorable moments that defined Nigerian and African football.
“I want to urge football fans in Lagos and across the country to come out in their numbers and be part of this historic occasion. It is an opportunity to honour our legends and see them back on the pitch after so many memorable years.”
“These are players who gave us unforgettable moments, inspired national pride and showed the world the quality and talent of Nigerian football. They deserve to be celebrated,” he added.
The Legends Football Game is presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with Afreximbank and CANEX. The event was publicly launched in Lagos on 9 September 2026.
The NSC said the initiative aligns with its commitment to promoting sports heritage, celebrating sporting icons and inspiring younger generations through the achievements of Nigeria’s sporting greats.
