Nigerian javelin star and national record holder, Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi, has committed ₦550,000 in prize money to the men’s javelin event at the 10th Anniversary edition of the Athletic Heat Meet, in a move aimed at encouraging athletes and rewarding outstanding performances.
The anniversary competition is scheduled to hold on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos. The sponsorship will benefit the top eight athletes in the men’s javelin competition.
Nnamdi, an Olympian and one of Nigeria’s most accomplished field athletes, has distinguished himself through remarkable performances at continental and international competitions.
He announced his arrival on the global stage by winning bronze at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. The achievement made him the first Nigerian to win a field-event medal at the competition since Esther Aghatise’s feat in 2002.
He went on to win gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana, and silver at the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, before representing Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
His remarkable career reached another milestone on April 17, 2026, when he established a new Nigerian national record of 84.68 metres at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida, United States.
At the collegiate level, Nnamdi enjoyed considerable success with the Baylor Bears, winning three consecutive Big 12 Outdoor Javelin titles from 2022 to 2024. Following his transfer to Texas A&M, he added the 2026 SEC Outdoor Javelin title to his achievements.
Under the prize sponsorship arrangement, the overall winner will receive ₦200,000, while the second-place finisher will earn ₦100,000 and the third-place athlete ₦75,000.
Other rewards include ₦50,000 for fourth place, ₦40,000 for fifth, ₦35,000 for sixth, ₦30,000 for seventh and ₦20,000 for eighth place.
The ₦550,000 prize package is designed to ensure that more competitors benefit financially from the event, beyond the traditional podium finishers.
Athletic Heat Chief Executive Officer, Eseroghene Oguma, commended Nnamdi for supporting the anniversary competition, describing such contributions as important to the growth of athletics and the recognition of emerging talents.
Oguma noted that the involvement of accomplished athletes and sports personalities in grassroots and domestic competitions would help strengthen the sport by creating incentives for improved performances.
Nnamdi’s gesture also underscores his commitment to giving back to Nigerian athletics and supporting the next generation of athletes through initiatives that promote competition and excellence.
The Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet is expected to attract athletes and other stakeholders as the competition celebrates a decade of contributing to athletics development in Nigeria.
