NiMet Issues Heat Stress Warning to 19 Nigerian States

A heat stress warning has been issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for 19 states across the country. The warning, which was issued on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, advises residents in the affected states of an increased likelihood of thermal discomfort over the next three to four days.

The affected states include: North-Central and Eastern States: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

Other Vulnerable Regions: Southwest and coastal areas, as well as parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto states

NiMet warns that exposure to excessive heat may result in fatigue and irritability, reduced cognitive function and motor skills.

  • Decreased productivity to mitigate the effects of heat stress, residents are advised to:
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Use cooling devices such as fans and air conditioners to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature
  • Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow proper air circulation
  • Minimize time spent outdoors, especially under direct sunlight
  • Avoid peak sun hours between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM
  • Wear protective accessories such as a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses to shield the face and eyes from direct sunlight.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.
