NIMC Dismisses Viral NIN Database Breach Claim, Assures Nigerians of Data Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN), database has been breached, describing the claim as false and unfounded.
In a statement issued on September 23, 2026, by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, PhD, the Commission said the video was a recycled report from 2024 which it had previously debunked.
NIMC stressed that its National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been breached or compromised, assuring Nigerians and legal residents that robust, multi-layered security infrastructure is in place to protect personal identity information.
The Commission expressed concern over the circulation of unverified information, warning that such claims could mislead the public and create unnecessary panic.
It urged members of the public to rely on NIMC’s official communication channels for accurate information concerning the National Identity Management System.
NINAuth Strengthens Data Protection
NIMC also highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication (NINAuth), a suite of web, API and mobile verification services designed to strengthen data security, protect privacy and simplify access to government services.
According to the Commission, NINAuth provides an official channel for integrating with NIMC’s backend infrastructure while giving individuals greater control over the use of their personal information.
The platform requires explicit consent from NIN holders before their data can be shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures or other verification purposes.
NIMC said the system enables individuals to securely authenticate their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions, without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or other personal information.
The Commission said the initiative aligns with the provisions of the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which require the fair, lawful and transparent handling of personal data.
NIMC reiterated its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, adding that it would continue to collaborate with security agencies and other relevant institutions to strengthen its systems and public engagement against misinformation.
