Nigeria Super League Set for Historic Debut in Lagos

The stage is set for a landmark moment in Nigerian cricket as the inaugural edition of the Nigeria Super League (NSL) is scheduled to bowl off from May 16 to May 31, 2026, at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval.
The competition, organised by the Nigeria Cricket Federation, is aimed at ushering in a new era of elite domestic cricket competition, talent development, fan engagement and commercial growth for the sport across the country.
Speaking on the significance of the tournament, the President of the federation described the Nigeria Super League as a transformational initiative designed to elevate Nigerian cricket while providing a sustainable pathway for players to compete at the highest level.
The inaugural season will feature six franchise teams representing different regions of the country: Central Eagles, Eastern Elephants, Middlebelt Tigers, Northern Lions, Southern Sharks and Western Dolphins.
According to the organisers, each franchise consists of 14 players alongside two technical officials, carefully selected to ensure competitive balance, regional representation and high-performance cricket throughout the tournament.
In preparation for the competition, the league successfully conducted its maiden player draft on May 9, where franchise captains and coaches strategically assembled their squads from a pool of some of the nation’s finest cricket talents.
The draft process, organisers said, reflected the league’s commitment to professionalism, competitiveness and player specialisation, with selections made across several key cricketing roles, including elite and core opening batters, middle-order batters, all-rounders, pace bowlers, spin bowlers and development players.
The Nigeria Super League is expected to deliver two weeks of thrilling cricket action, emerging rivalries and exciting fan experiences, while also showcasing Nigeria’s rapidly growing cricket culture.
Beyond the on-field action, the competition is also seen as a strategic effort to strengthen the domestic cricket ecosystem by creating greater visibility for players, coaches, officials, sponsors and stakeholders, while positioning Nigeria as one of Africa’s emerging cricket destinations.
Fans, partners and cricket enthusiasts across the country have been encouraged to follow the tournament as Nigeria witnesses the birth of what is expected to become the nation’s premier franchise cricket competition.
“The countdown has officially begun. Six franchises. One historic venue. One champion,” said Zeal Ibe, Media Manager of the federation.
