Team Nigeria made a colourful statement at the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal on Saturday, joining athletes from across the world in celebrating African culture, sporting excellence and international unity.

Led by athletics sensation Rosemary Chigozie Nwankwo, who served as the country’s flagbearer, the Nigerian contingent marched proudly into the packed Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, displaying the nation’s green and white colours before thousands of spectators.

The ceremony marked a historic milestone for Africa, as Senegal became the first African country to host an Olympic sporting event, welcoming young athletes from around the world for the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Nwankwo, regarded as one of Nigeria’s major medal prospects, will be seeking to make her mark in athletics, particularly in the women’s 100 metres event.

The colourful ceremony featured spectacular displays of Senegalese culture, including music, dance and elaborate performances, reflecting the country’s rich heritage and hospitality.

A major highlight was the arrival of the Youth Olympic flame at the stadium after an extensive journey through Senegal’s 14 administrative regions over more than 45 days.

The flame was subsequently paraded around the stadium before the lighting of the official cauldron, formally ushering in the Games and reinforcing the Olympic ideals of friendship, peace and unity.

Nigeria’s 19-member contingent, comprising 12 female and seven male athletes, will compete in six sports: athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.

With Nwankwo leading the charge, Team Nigeria will be hoping to translate its impressive presence at the opening ceremony into strong performances and medal-winning displays during the competition.

The Games will take place across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, bringing together emerging sporting talents from different countries in a celebration of youth, diversity and athletic excellence.

The statement was signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media, Office of the Director General, National Sports Commission, on November 1, 2026.
