Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to promoting peace and stability in Sudan while strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between both countries.
The assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a courtesy visit by Sudan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ambassador Ahmed noted that Nigeria and Sudan share long-standing historical and cultural ties, shaped by centuries of interaction, migration, and cooperation. He stressed that both nations remain closely connected with shared interests in regional peace, security, and development.
In his remarks, Ambassador Abdelaal highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between the two countries, pointing to the strong integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society. He also briefed the Nigerian delegation on recent developments in Sudan, including ongoing recovery efforts in conflict-affected areas.
While acknowledging progress in restoring stability in parts of the country, the Sudanese envoy expressed concern over continued external interference, warning that it could prolong the conflict and undermine regional security.
Both diplomats emphasised the need to end hostilities through dialogue and negotiation, noting that the crisis in Sudan carries broader implications for peace and stability across Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.
Ambassador Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s active role within the African Union and the wider international community in advocating for a peaceful resolution of the crisis. He stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes and sustained engagement among stakeholders.
The meeting also explored avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including plans to convene the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address issues of mutual interest.
Discussions further covered a proposed high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, as well as measures to safeguard Nigerian assets in Sudan and support citizens affected by the conflict.
Both countries concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to deepening diplomatic relations and working collaboratively toward peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
