Nigeria’s women’s tennis team has kicked off its campaign at the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III in Botswana on a winning note, defeating Rwanda 2-1 in their opening tie to boost hopes of earning promotion to the World Group II.
The Billie Jean King Cup, widely regarded as the Women’s World Cup of Tennis, has brought together 12 African nations competing for just two promotion slots, making every match crucial in the race for qualification.
Team Nigeria is represented by four of the country’s rising stars—Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed and Etoro Bassey.
Notably, all four players emerged from the DavNotch National Open Tennis Championship, underlining the tournament’s growing impact in identifying and developing top female tennis talent in Nigeria.
The hard-fought victory over Rwanda highlights the determination and quality within the Nigerian squad as they seek a return to the higher levels of international women’s team tennis.
Buoyed by the opening-day success, Nigeria will now focus on its remaining group matches, aware that only the top two teams at the tournament will secure promotion to the World Group II.
The impressive start has further reinforced confidence in the growth of Nigerian women’s tennis and the success of grassroots development programmes that continue to produce players capable of excelling on the continental stage.
Tennis enthusiasts and stakeholders across the country will be hoping Team Nigeria maintains its winning momentum and clinches one of the coveted promotion tickets, bringing further glory to the nation on the African tennis stage.
