Nigeria Congratulates Germany on the Election of New Chancellor

Nigeria has extended its warm congratulations to Germany on the successful election of Friedrich Merz as the new Chancellor. Merz won with 325 votes in the 630-seat Bundestag on May 6, 2025.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended Germany’s strong democratic traditions and values, demonstrated through a peaceful and transparent electoral process. The government expressed confidence that under Merz’s leadership, Germany will continue to play a pivotal role in advancing global peace, stability, and prosperity.
A press release signed by the Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said that Nigeria looks forward to deepening bilateral relations with Germany in areas of mutual interest on Trade, Investment, Security and Sustainable Development.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation with Germany within the framework of the United Nations and other international fora.
“The Nigerian government and people wish Chancellor Merz a successful tenure and express readiness to work closely with Germany for the benefit of both nations and the global community”, the statement concluded.
